Our contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of people around the world. In 2015, all UN Member States adopted 17 Goals as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which sets out a plan to achieve the Goals in 15 years.
To achieve these goals, everyone has to do their part: governments, the private sector, civil society and individuals.
At Sisters Hospitallers we are committed to incorporating into our work actions that contribute to achieving the Goals.

- We operate in one of the most disadvantaged countries in the world, Liberia, ranked 178th out of 191 countries on the Human Development Index. We provide health care to the surrounding community at little or no cost.
- In our Mental Health Unit, we frequently see women who are totally excluded from society and living on the streets.
- Our Empowerment and Mentoring Program helps these women to acquire skills and knowledge to start small businesses when they are discharged.
- In our Mental Health Unit we provide our patients with the necessary food while they stay at the centre.
- We participate in regular campaigns and actions aimed at alleviating hunger in our environment.

- Providing health and well-being is precisely the main objective of our Health Centre and our Mental Health Unit.
- We work in collaboration with public and private bodies in the health sector and contribute knowledge, technology and medicines to improve the health situation in Liberia.

- Our Scholarship Program enables children and young people from the community near the Health Centre to complete their education and equip themselves with knowledge and skills for a better future.
- Our centre collaborates with the country’s leading educational institutions to train new professionals to ensure a brighter future for Liberia.

- We are an institution led by women with a special sensitivity towards women who suffer. If people with mental illness are the forgotten among the forgotten, this is even more evident in the case of women, and that is why our Mental Health Unit fights against the discrimination and stigma that haunts them.
- Our Empowerment and Mentoring Program helps these women acquire the skills and knowledge to start small businesses when they are discharged.
- We fight for the elimination of violence against women, especially against women with mental illness, and provide an environment where they can feel safe and respected.

- Our centre offers hygienic and sanitary conditions above the standard of the country.
- Part of the electricity consumed by the Mental Health Unit and the Sisters’ House comes from solar panels.
- We apply actions to reduce consumption, reuse and recycle, and promote environmentally friendly practices.

- Since its arrival in Liberia in 1966, the entire mission of the Hospitaller Sisters in Liberia has been focused on helping to alleviate the needs of the country and to do what we can to bridge the gap between it and other more developed countries.
- Our Empowerment and Mentoring Program helps these women acquire the skills and knowledge to start small businesses upon discharge.
- Our centre collaborates with the country’s leading educational institutions to train new professionals to ensure a more prosperous future for Liberia.

- We facilitate the access of the surrounding community to the basic service of health care.
- We offer a safe and inclusive space, especially for women and children, and for people with disabilities.
- We are actively involved in improving the quality of life of our community, in a way that respects their social and cultural characteristics.

- We attract and mobilise financial resources from developed countries for development projects in Liberia.
- We are a vehicle for international cooperation in science, technology and innovation. We transfer knowledge to local actors and accompany them to facilitate a change that not only guarantees the future sustainability of the services we provide, but also the improvement of the quality of the country’s health system. We support and contribute to the training of local professionals.
- We form alliances with public and private actors in our sector and other sectors to advance the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
