30 Jan 2021 Lilaton women´s 5K run will give its “charity euro” over to We Are Like You

Lilaton, a well-known 5K run for women in San Sebastian, has chosen We Are Like You as the destiny for its “charity euro” this year.

Lilaton has been held every year since 1990 to celebrate March 8th, International Women’s Day. Organized by the Feminist Coordination Group of the capital of Gipuzkoa, the first edition had only 146 registered participants, and sought to claim equality and promote the empowerment of women in society.

In this 2021 edition, and because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the race will have a different format: runners will be able to run 5 kilometers anywhere in the World at any time between March 5th and 8th, and will record their route and their time through an app downloaded on their cell phone. The cell phone will thus function as the chip that is normally placed in the running shoes or on the race bib.

Registration for the race costs €4, and for each woman registered, the organization will contribute €1  —the “charity euro”— to our We Are Like You initiative, which seeks to empower women with mental illness in Monrovia (Liberia) by providing them with psychiatric and psychological care and medication, and giving them skills and microcredits that will enable them to start earning a living independently with small jobs and businesses when they are discharged.

So far about 1,000 participants have already registered, a number that is sure to increase as the dates of the race approach.

We Are Like You would like to thank the organization of the Lilaton, sponsors and collaborators —Atletico San Sebastián, Laboral Kutxa, San Sebastian City Council, Gipuzkoa Provincial Council and Emakunde among others— for their contribution to our project.
